Ryo Onishi has been my friend, training partner and instructor over many years now. He has been training hard in martial arts for as long as I have known him, indeed he began his training a long time ago in Japan, where he trained Goju-ryu karate and Kendo, and continues his daily martial arts training to this day.

Ryo-san
’s attitude is particularly suited to the practice of martial arts because he does not view training as anything out of the ordinary - it is a serious endeavour for which he has immense enthusiasm, and this is reflected in his commitment to daily taijutsu practice. He regularly travels all over the country to learn from quality martial artists, and to attend and organise seminars. By training with many people he has gained experience with budoka of all shapes and sizes, and at all levels of ability. He is particularly modest, and treats his teachers, training partners and students with the respect they deserve as human beings, and it is common knowledge amongst those that train with him, that he always gives his all to them, without expectation.

Since he received his first dan grade (black belt), he has been given permission to pass on his knowledge of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, with the support and encouragement of many shidoshi (5th dan above). When Ryo began taking his first classes in Sheffield, I was lucky enough to receive instruction from him, and we all miss his presence in our dojo, though he still visits us regularly. Currently he resides in London, where he holds regular classes and continues to guide students of martial arts in an open and honest manner.

It is true to say that Ryo has considerable experience in the study, practice and instruction of body movement and martial arts. This includes how to fall, roll and leap, the use of strikes, joint locking, throwing and choking, and also the use of a wide range of traditional Japanese weaponry, such as the shoto (short) and katana (long) swords, tanto (knife), yari (spear), naginata, hanbo (short stick), jo (4 foot long stick) and roku shako bo (6 foot long stick). He has also trained in Systema (Russian Martial Art) since its arrival in this country.

Ryo-san has a good and happy heart, and if you have the opportunity I would recommend training with him, for if you pay attention, you will learn a lot about Martial Arts. It pleases me greatly to be his friend and I wish him the best of luck in all of his endeavours.
